Buffy’s James Marsters gives verdict on ‘unresolved’ Angel storylines ahead of reboot
EXCLUSIVE: James Marsters gives his opinion on the various “unresolved” storylines from Buffy spin-off Angel ahead of revival
James Marsters, who is best known for playing the vampire Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, gave his verdict on spin-off show Angel and how its unresolved storylines may be addressed in an exclusive interview with Reach Screen Time. Angel, created by Joss Whedon and starring David Boreanaz in the titular role, launched off the back of Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s incredible success and gained a huge fan following of its own.
The show ran from 1999 until 2004, when it was suddenly cancelled and the show’s writers forced to come up with a finale at short notice. While many fans were satisfied by its ending overall, the limited time constraints meant that some questions were left unanswered.
Speaking about the Buffy reboot following the news earlier this year that Sarah Michelle Gellar plans to revive the show as its new Executive Producer, Marsters, 62, addressed whether he believes those storylines should finally be tied up.

Asked about how the Buffy revival might address what has come before it, Marsters pondered: “It’s hard, because when one feels the need to encompass and deal with everything that has come before, it can get quite cumbersome.
“And it is harder to then tell a clean story with a clean arc, so I’m not sure what to hope for.
“If some of these things inspire them, I think that’s good. I think if it encumbers them, they might want to just not deal with it,” he added with a laugh.
Reflecting on how much lore there now is about the Buffyverse, Marsters indicated that it might not be possible to address everything that has come before.
He then quipped: “Try to write a Star Wars movie… It’s impossible! There’s just so much stuff you have to account for.”
Meanwhile Gellar, who played the eponymous Buffy Summers from 1997 to 2003, is returning in her role while also overseeing the upcoming reboot, which has recruited Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao to direct the pilot episode.
Yesterday, fans were thrilled to see Gellar pictured in Los Angeles, where both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and spin-off Angel were filmed.

She also recently sparked a frenzy on social media with an Instagram update revealing some pictures of the script from their first pilot table readthrough alongside her name card, which read: “Sarah Michelle Gellar Prinze: ‘Buffy Summers.'”
Speaking about his co-star, Marsters highlighted how integral Gellar was to the original show, crediting her for its seven-season run.
He said: “She’s amazing, by the way. I really believe that if anyone else would have played Buffy, we never would have lasted seven years.
“Because we worked up to 20 hours a day and so there’s not a lot of sleep happening, and she was in almost every scene.”
The actor added: “Sarah was always there and she never flagged, she was never late, she always had a good attitude, she knew her lines, she was a monster.
“And consequentially, no one else could relax because she was always just so on point. She was amazing.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available to stream on Hulu in the US and ITVX in the UK
